[Gustafson Guthrie Nichol] Seattle Civic Center

This civic campus design encompasses three city blocks on a steep slope in downtown Seattle. Eighty feet of elevation change occurs from one end of the campus to the other, between busy streets that create view corridors to the waterfront at the base of the hill.

A variety of plaza types and scales are carved into the Seattle hillside and visually connected by water, stone, glass and light. Terraces are finished to show ocean-like colors and textures from above, when one looks toward the water beyond. A completely different view of the campus is had from the base of the hill looking inland toward the mountains; the vertical faces of the terraces and campus buildings are coordinated in earth-toned stone and falling water. A warm, bright glass wall in the central plaza catches the sun, reflects the sunset, and glows at night.
